After the tragedy of Bush, every topic is fair game; so McCain, your war record is fair game

Can anyone really argue with the fact that the Bush presidency is and was a disaster of historical proportions?

For those of you who still support him consider what dominates the news: the wars, the foreclosures, the $4 gas, the stagnant stock market and Britney Spears. Case closed.

Bush's failures certainly do not come from a man of genius whom the world just did not understand. It comes from simple lack of experience in matters domestic and foreign.

Because he left the country and the world in such a mess, we need to look long and hard at whom will replace him. Everything about both McCain and Obama should be on the table.

Yes that includes McCain's war record. He is a veteran, a war hero by definition because he was captured and totured. But that does not make him automatically fit to be president. There are scores like him that would readily admit they are not fit to be president.

So lets not pick some topic and make it "off limits" for no good reason.

And yes, that goes for Obama as well.

During the previous

During the previous presidential campaign, the GOP was able to take a Purple Heart and turn it into a smear.  Why now are they crying foul that someone might question whether or not military service is a requirement for being president.  They had no qualms at all in 2004 in making the term 'swiftboat' into a negative connotation for just about everything in our language.  I sincerely doubt that the vets who courageously served on swiftboats during the Vietnam era appreciate their service being aligned with such a travesty in modern politics, yet they will have to resign themselves to once more defend their service, or just hide it.    Welcome back the return of the humbled Vietnam Vets - the ones we spit upon for their service.

This obvious double standard brought to our country compliments of the the GOP frankly makes me sick.  They started this nastiness in 2004, but they sure don't like it now.

I'm proud that Obama made it clear that he honors McCain's service, as does any clear thinking citizen.  But honestly, is every former POW now qualified to be president?  Of course not!  It's just one part of the man and a very important part, but one must consider the entire package.  Age and former political actions are also part of the man.  And for me, that's where it all breaks down.

Perhaps the GOP will consider what they attack next time.  If honored military service can come under their attack, there must be no limit to their mud slinging.  Apparently, nothing is sacred - not marriage, not military service.  Is race the next frontier?  I wonder how the GOP will spin that topic to their pleasure.  Rest assured they are working on it as we speak.
