Don't blame the Supreme Court

The US Supreme Court has ruled that corporations and unions may freely spend their own money in a political campaigns, without any restrictions.

Critics are quick to condemn the ruling as a blow to democracy. The influence special interest will now have on the political system will further silence the little people.

In my humble view, the blow to democracy is the apathy of the voting public. Did you know that on a national level, the turnout is around 50% for presidential elections and much lower for mid term elections?  Does anyone have any idea how pathetically low the turnout is for state wide races and local races?

So, before accusing the Supreme Court for upholding the constitution, look at our voting habits. Before we accuse the Court for suppressing our rights lets make sure we even exercise them.

When some lunetic exercises his/her right to free speach, don't we ignore them? When some huge corporation will spend a fortune supporting some candidate, will we not be smart enough to see through that?

I belive that the ruling will actually backfire!! If it has any real impact to start with.

Blame the Ultra Right Wing

Blame the Ultra Right Wing Supreme Court for ruling that corporations are legal persons. They are not! People have free speech not unions and companies, They are legal entities created to serve specific functions. Corporate interests and unions should not be able to contribute anything to politicians. It is clearly bribery. The average person may choose not to vote because he or she feels powerless in the face of a government-corporate state that has its own agenda that cares little for our needs.
The decision to allow unlimited financial backing and therefore control of our elected representatives is only the most recent in a long line of
law-creating decisions but so called conservatives on the high court.

linomartinez I think that

I think that Citizen K missed the boat this time. What the Supreme court ruling was that corporations are persons, and as any person, the corporation is entitled to commit unlimited sums of money pro and con any candidate or any issue. That is what is unfair about the Supreme Court ruling. Can you put a corporation in jail for committing a crime. The answer is no, so the corporation cannot be a person, yet the the Right Wing idiots, Scalia, Alito, Roberts , Kennedy , and Thomas on the Supreme court voted the corporations were persons. These " justices " should be impeached for being completely incompetent idiots.
